Ak Zhol MPs met with the OSCE ODIHR Team in the central office of the party. The meeting was hold in the framework of the project “Enhancing gender equality in political parties in the OSCE region”.
Tiina Kukkamaa-Bah, Chief of the Democratic Governance and Gender Unit, informed MPs about the goal and tasks of the project.
Deputy Head of the Ak Zhol Group in the Parliament, Yekaterina Nikitinskaya told about the gender situation in the party.
“Ak Zhol party has 256000 members, 90 000 of them or 35% are women. Representation of women MPs in the current Mazhilis of the Parliament is 27,1% (29 out of 107 MPs), while in 2006 this figure was only 10,4%.
3 of 7 MPs in the Ak Zhol Group are women, or 43 %. In the last convocation of the Parliament we also had 3 women, but there were 8 MPs, that is in percentage term was 37,5%” – she noted.
According to MP Yerlan Barlybayev these indicators are the results of the implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy in the country.
Meruert Kazbekova informed the participants of the meeting about activities of the Kazakhstan NGOs, including the work of the Union of Kazakhstan women entrepreneurs headed by her..
During the meeting other aspects of gender police were discussed as well as issues of further interaction within the framework of the project.
